Launching Your Boat on Lake Winnipesaukee
Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire, covering 72 square miles with over 250 islands and 182 miles of shoreline. Public boat launches are spread around the lake from Alton Bay on the south to Moultonborough on the north, giving boaters access to every part of the water.
Most launches have paved ramps and trailer parking, though capacity varies widely. Free public ramps include Alton Bay, Downing's Landing, and the Wolfeboro Town Docks. Meredith and Center Harbor charge non-residents ($30 and $25 respectively), and private marinas like West Alton Marina, Fay's Boat Yard, and Roberts Cove Basin offer reliable paid launching with good parking. If you plan to launch on a Saturday in July or August, arrive before 8 AM. State park ramps at Ellacoya charge a day-use fee but tend to have better maintained facilities.
New Hampshire requires boat registration for all motorized vessels and personal watercraft. Out-of-state boaters can operate on NH waters with valid home-state registration for up to 30 days. After that, a temporary NH registration is required. Life jackets, a throwable flotation device, a fire extinguisher, and navigation lights (for night boating) are mandatory. NH Marine Patrol enforces a headway-speed-only zone within 150 feet of shore, swimmers, docks, and moored boats.
The boating season on Winnipesaukee runs from ice-out (typically mid-April) through mid-October. Peak season is Memorial Day through Labor Day. Water temperatures reach the mid-70s in shallow bays by August, cooler in the deeper main body.
Staying on the Lake?
Many of our vacation rentals include private docks or mooring, so you can keep your boat right at the property during your stay. Waterfront homes with dock access are the most popular bookings each summer.
